How often do you think about precision in your daily workouts? Do you find yourself just simply going through the motions in your training?

Precision, in my opinion, is one of the most overlooked and underestimated attributes in our training. From time to time, I see students, both beginners and advanced, display an unfocused and lackadaisical attitude toward basic drills and techniques in training. It’s what I call the ā€˜been there, done that attitude’. Certainly I’ve been there many times. Sometimes I get bored with a drill or don’t think it’s that particularly important. And when that happens, a couple of things happen. First, my accuracy and precision is jeopardized. How often do you get hit when your partner is not concentrating on a drill? Yes, it’s not a mystery that a certain amount of accuracy will prevent injuries. It is very important to remember that even the most rudimentary drills and techniques need to be constantly trained no matter how tedious or insignificant they may seem. Even the most experienced NFL quarterbacks continue to practice their motions on the sidelines during a game. Groin kicks and eye poke appear easy until you try to do it to someone in a combative situation. If these techniques are not properly trained, they will not work for you.

A student’s mental shift should be ā€œmake every hit count.ā€ Try not to simply go through the motions, but to actually do the drills with conviction and intent. This is Bruce Lee’s ā€œemotional contentā€ message in 'Enter the Dragon'. Pay particular attention to technique execution. Do you have any preparatory movements? Do you have a good defensive cover during your delivery? Are your body mechanics correct to make the hit count? Being involved in the martial arts for over 30 years, I discovered long ago that attention to detail does matter. Having a precision mindset often will lead to a better understanding of principles and concepts.
