Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)

(The gentle art of folding clothes while people are still in them)

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is one the most popular and highly-regarded martial arts in the world. BJJ is a deep art that provides unmatched core-strength training, endurance and cardio. And while we encourage students who are interested to compete in local and national tournaments, at MKG we emphasize the personal improvement potential BJJ offers—the health and fitness benefits, increased mobility, self-defense, community building and sheer grit—all done in a fun atmosphere where you can learn something interesting.

What to Expect During Class

In class, you will practice effective takedowns and learn how to submit an opponent using chokes and joint locks. That’s in addition to mastering escapes, holds, and positional flow. Our instructors work hard to create a safe, easy-going environment where students of all levels can learn and train together using the most up-to-date techniques and teaching methods.

We also recognize that many students come to us with different physical capabilities. Our instructors are great at helping students work within their own limitations and then gradually expanding beyond them. At MKG, we view martial arts as a lifetime pursuit.

Our Lineage

Our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu lineage reaches back to Rick Faye’s association with Professor John Machado beginning in the 1990s. We’ve continued within the Machado lineage through Professor Chris McCune, who holds seminars at MKG four times a year. Other influences include Professor Roy Harris and Sensei Erik Paulson.

Even More Grappling

For those interested in other grappling arts, our Kali and Silat classes give students a battle-field look at groundwork in traditional systems. We also have JKD classes that take a more street-level approach to grappling for when you don’t necessarily want to go all the way to the ground. Although the majority of our groundwork is BJJ, our blended approach to martial arts training is part of what makes MKG so great.
